Position Information
The Resident Advisor (RA) is a hired student leader who is expected to act as a role model, mentor, resource, and support to students living residence. The primary objective of the RA as part of the Residence Life Department is to foster a community environment that eases the student transition into college and supports the personal and academic success of residence students.
The RA will live in an assigned residence room and be responsible for facilitating social and educational programs while creating a safe, respectful environment through the enforcement of the Residence Community Living Standards.
RAs perform many different duties within the residence, including:
· Programming: RAs plan and host educational and social events for their own community, and for the wider residence community.
· Duty Shifts: During a duty shift, RAs will perform rounds of the building to ensure the health and safety of all residents; perform the duties of the sign in desk; complete all administrative tasks as required; engage with and support students in residence.
· Student Engagement: RAs are expected to engage with their community on a regular basis, ensuring that all residents are aware of the support available to them and the events happening in residence. RAs may also use social media to engage with residents.

Safe Operating Procedures
Many aspects of the RA role have been adapted to minimize risk to both staff and students. There are additional health and safety standards as well as training to minimize risk in your role.
Yes, you do need to live in Residence to be an RA.
RA candidates are required to apply for Residence and accept their Offer of Residence in accordance with deadlines and payments applicable to the Residence application 2023-2024.

RAs are able to choose their roommate during the roommate selection process in August, just like all of the other residents.
RAs have up to 16 hours available to them each week. These hours may be averaged out across the month.
RA duty shifts come in two forms, one is for RA on-call, which will entail being in charge of the on-call phone to respond to student emergencies after hours.
The second form is the programming shifts which entails planning and executing programs, events etc, for community engagement.
RA programming shifts vary based on the nature of the program. Programming shifts usually occur in the evenings and at weekends.
Some weekend shifts are required, eg. Move In and Orientation Weekend, etc.
Extra shifts may also become available for additional Residence Life projects.
No, RAs do not get free housing. RAs are paid an hourly wage for the hours that they work. This money can be used to pay for your housing if you wish.

Yes, it would be. All RAs are required to provide their Residence Life Coordinator with their school schedule each term, and the RA work schedule will be built around your availability. You will also have the opportunity to swap your shifts with other RAs should you need to.
Resident Advisors typically start at the end of August. The exact start date will be communicated to you once an offer is issued.
